PS5 disc or Digital Edition, which should you buy?

Short answer: Buy a PS5 with a disc drive if you own PS4 or PS5 discs, buy used games, or watch Blu-ray. Choose the Digital Edition if you buy everything from PlayStation Store. The add-on Disc Drive fits only Digital Edition slim models and PS5 Pro.

Checkout slip: Should I buy the PS5 with a disc drive or the Digital Edition?

  1. 01Count the PS4 and PS5 discs you already own and still want to play
  2. 02Decide whether you watch 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD on the console
  3. 03Read the model number on the listing (CFI-1000, CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or Pro)
  4. 04If buying Digital Edition or Pro, check whether you also need the Disc Drive accessory
  5. 05Note that the add-on Disc Drive does not fit the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition
  6. 06Remember the add-on drive needs an internet connection to pair the first time

LINES6

The PS5 is sold with and without a disc drive, and the difference is easy to miss in a listing title. The two versions play the same games and connect to the same PlayStation Store. What changes is how you can buy games, whether your existing discs work, and whether you can watch physical movies.

What is actually different between the two?

A PS5 with a disc drive reads PS5 and PS4 game discs plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD. A PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so every game must come from PlayStation Store as a download. The PS5 Pro also ships without a disc drive. Sony sells a separate Disc Drive accessory that attaches to some of these consoles.

Storage capacity can differ between versions too. Sony’s console page lists the current disc model and Digital Edition with different storage sizes, so compare the capacity printed on the listing, not just the console name.

Which consoles can take the add-on Disc Drive?

This is the line most buyers get wrong. According to PlayStation Direct, the Disc Drive is for PS5 Pro consoles and PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups (the slim design). It is not listed for the original, larger CFI-1000 Digital Edition. The drive also needs an internet connection to pair with the console the first time.

So if you are buying a used or refurbished Digital Edition and expect to add a drive later, the model number decides whether that plan works. It is printed on the console’s label and often in the listing details.

Do your old discs still matter?

If you own PS4 discs, a disc drive keeps them playable. Sony’s support page adds a detail that affects upgrades: to upgrade an eligible PS4 game disc to its digital PS5 version, you need a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc must stay inserted every time you play. Digital PS4 games you bought on PlayStation Store can be upgraded on either version.

Sony’s PS5 page also carries a notice that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be sold in digital format only, while discs for games released before then can continue to be played. That shifts the long-term value of a drive toward your existing collection, used discs and movies rather than future releases.

When is the Digital Edition the better buy?

The Digital Edition makes sense when:

  • You already buy almost everything from PlayStation Store.
  • You do not own a disc library you care about.
  • You do not watch physical Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray on the console.
  • You prefer to wait for store sales rather than buy or resell used discs.

It makes less sense if you trade in or resell games, borrow discs from friends, or want the console to double as a 4K Blu-ray player.

What should you check on the listing itself?

  1. Model name and number. “PS5 Digital Edition”, “PS5” and “PS5 Pro” are different products; the CFI number tells you which design it is.
  2. Bundle contents. A bundle may include a game as a download voucher rather than a disc; see the game edition checklist.
  3. Disc Drive included or not. Some bundles include the drive; most do not.
  4. Seller. For a console, prefer listings sold by the retailer or manufacturer so warranty and returns are clear.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition and planning to add Sony’s Disc Drive.
  • Assuming PS5 Pro includes a disc drive.
  • Buying a Digital Edition while holding a stack of PS4 discs you meant to upgrade.

Next steps: plan storage with the PS5 M.2 SSD checklist, check pads with the controller compatibility checklist, or browse the consoles aisle.

Questions buyers also ask

Can I add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition later?
Yes for the slim Digital Edition (CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups) and PS5 Pro, using Sony's Disc Drive accessory. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not listed as compatible.
Can I upgrade a PS4 game disc to the PS5 version on a Digital Edition?
Sony says upgrading an eligible PS4 disc to its digital PS5 version needs a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc must stay inserted to play.
