Will this M.2 SSD work in a PS5?

Short answer: A PS5 M.2 SSD must be a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drive of 250GB to 8TB, in an M.2 2230 to 22110 size, and Sony recommends 5,500MB/s sequential reads. It also needs a heatsink or cooling structure that fits the slot.

Checkout slip: Will this M.2 SSD work in my PS5?

  1. 01The listing says PCIe Gen4 (or Gen5) x4 NVMe, not SATA M.2 and not Gen3
  2. 02Capacity is between 250GB and 8TB
  3. 03Size code is 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110
  4. 04Sequential read speed is listed as 5,500MB/s or faster
  5. 05A heatsink is included, or you are buying one that fits Sony's height limit
  6. 06Your console runs current system software (8TB support came by update)

LINES6

Most PS5 storage mistakes come from one of two things: buying an M.2 drive that is the wrong type, or buying the right drive with a heatsink that will not fit under the slot cover. Sony publishes the exact requirements on its support page, so the checklist above is built from that page, line by line.

What kind of SSD does the PS5 accept?

The expansion slot in every PS5 model (original, Slim and Pro) accepts an M.2 NVMe SSD on a PCIe Gen4 x4 interface. That rules out two common lookalikes:

  • SATA M.2 drives. They have the same M.2 shape but use a different protocol. They will not work.
  • PCIe Gen3 NVMe drives. Many older budget drives are Gen3. Sony’s requirement is Gen4.

PCIe Gen5 drives are backward compatible with Gen4 slots, so they can work, but you pay for speed the console will not use. If a listing does not say “Gen4” or “PCIe 4.0” anywhere, treat that as a reason to look closer, not a detail to skip.

How much capacity can you add?

Sony lists 250GB to 8TB as the supported capacity range. The 8TB ceiling arrived through a system software update, so update the console before installing a very large drive. Remember that a drive’s usable space is smaller than its label: formatting and system reserve take a share, so a “1TB” drive shows less free space than 1,000GB.

A practical way to choose: count the games you want installed at once rather than the total library. Large current games often take well over 100GB each, so a 1TB drive fills faster than the number suggests.

Which physical sizes fit the slot?

The slot takes M.2 drives in the 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 sizes. The first two digits are the width (22mm) and the rest is the length in millimetres. Almost every consumer NVMe drive is 2280, which fits.

The tighter limit is height. Sony gives a maximum total size for the drive including its cooling: up to 110mm long, 25mm wide, and 11.25mm high, with no more than 8mm above the board and 2.45mm below it. A tall gaming-PC heatsink can exceed that and stop the slot cover from closing.

Is a faster drive always better?

Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or faster. Drives slower than that may still be accepted, but the console can run a speed test when you format the drive, and slower drives risk performance issues in some games. Write speed matters less for gameplay; you mostly feel it when moving games between drives.

What you should not chase is a big number on a drive that lacks the basics. A Gen4 drive with a fitting heatsink beats a faster one that is the wrong height.

Does the drive need a heatsink?

Sony says the M.2 SSD needs effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink or a heat transfer sheet. Many drives are sold in two versions: a bare drive and the same model “with heatsink”. Before checkout, check:

  1. Which version the listing is for (the option selector often swaps between them).
  2. If bare, whether you are also buying a heatsink rated to fit the PS5 slot height.
  3. Whether a single-sided heat sheet is enough for your drive; Sony allows either style as long as the size limits are met.

What about USB external drives?

USB drives are a different job. A PS5 can use USB extended storage (Sony lists 250GB to 8TB and SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or faster) to store PS5 games and to play PS4 games. PS5 games stored on USB must be copied back to internal storage or the M.2 SSD before you can play them. If your goal is to play more PS5 games without reshuffling, the M.2 slot is the answer; if you mostly want a backup shelf, a USB drive is the cheaper route.

Mistakes to avoid at checkout

  • Buying a SATA M.2 drive because the listing title says “M.2 SSD”.
  • Picking the bare-drive option when you meant the heatsink version, or the reverse.
  • Assuming a PC heatsink fits; check the 11.25mm height limit.
  • Forgetting the system update before installing a drive larger than the console previously supported.

Questions buyers also ask

Can I play PS5 games from a USB external drive?
You can store PS5 games on USB extended storage, but you must move them to the console storage or an M.2 SSD to play them. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
Does a PS5 SSD need a heatsink?
Sony says an M.2 SSD needs effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink or heat transfer sheet, and lists the maximum size that fits the expansion slot.
